Glossary

List of terms used in describing the species of algae listed.

Calcified-Stoney, contains calcium carbonate.

Conspicuous– Standing out, clearly visible.

Dichotomously– Branching with equal forking.

Inconspicuous– Not clearly visible or attracting attention.

Endemic– Being specific to a place, only found in a certain area.

Epilithic– Grows on stone or hard stone-like surfaces.

Epiphytic– Growing on another algae but attached only superficially to the surface.

Filamentous– In the form of a filament.

Gametangia– Sex organ in which a gamete is formed.

Gametophyte– Gamete producing generation of an alga.

Mariculture– A specialized branch of aquaculture that involves the cultivation of marine  organisms for food or other products.

Membranous– Like a membrane, a thin pliable layer.

Monospecific– Contains only one species.

Prostrate– Lying along the substrate.

Rhizoids– A unicellular or multicellular filament acting as an organ of attachment.

Saccate– Having the form of a sac or pouch.

Sporangia– A spore producing reproductive organ.

Sporophyte– The spore producing generation.

Terete– Cylindrical but usually slightly tapering at both ends, circular in cross section, and smooth-surfaced

Thallus– The body of the plant.

Tubular– Having the form of a tube.

Whorls– Groups of branches radially distributed and attached at the same plane of an axis.
